There’s lots to love about autumn. Sure, the nights might be getting longer and the days getting colder, but it’s a season of cosy blankets, crunchy leaves, and of course, some beautifully sweet treats. Halloween is just around the corner, and it’s time to get baking! Aside from Christmas, there’s no better time to get in the kitchen than Halloween, and if your designer kitchen is fitted with the latest gadgetry from the likes of Neff and Quooker, now is a fantastic time to put them through their paces! Here’s some spooky recipe inspiration from our kitchens to help inspire your bakes this year.

Scary Meringue Ghosts

Ghoulish ghosts are a must at Halloween, and these meringues are the perfect way to spook up your party. Adorable and easy to make, they’ll become a Halloween staple. To make them, you’ll need:

• 500g caster sugar
• 250g egg whites
• ¼ tsp pumpkin spice mix (or regular mixed spice mix)
• 1 tsp cream of tartar
• Edible black ink

Heat your Neff oven to 200C/180C fan. Prepare a tray with baking parchment and add the sugar, shaking it out so that it’s level. Heat for 5 minutes until it’s hot and bubbling. Beat the cream of tartar with the egg whites until they form stiff peaks. Reduce the oven temperature to 110C/90C fan. Start adding the sugar to the mix until you have a stiff and glossy mixture. Add the spice flavouring and gently fold it in. Use a piping bag to squeeze the mixture onto the baking tray, releasing pressure as you pipe it to form ghost-like peaks. Bake for 40-50 minutes and add big ghost-like eyes with your edible ink. All done! Eerie, but enticing.

Tasty and terrifying Mummy Biscuits

Here’s a super simple idea that has plenty of spookiness! These mummy biscuits are delicious and easy to do, making a great addition to your trick or treat snacks. Start by baking a simple, round vanilla biscuit and cover in white icing. Wait for the first layer to dry before using a piping bag with a thin nozzle to add horizontal, white stripes to the biscuits – the more uneven, the better! These should look like your mummies’ bandages. Pop two little eyes on (use tiny white marshmallows and black edible ink to DIY your own), and your biscuits are ready to serve.

Easy Peasy Spider Decorations

If you’re looking for an easy way to add some Halloween creepiness to your cakes, cookies, and biscuits, we have a great idea. Use your Quooker tap to fill a bowl with boiling water, and add another bowl on top with milk or dark chocolate. Melt the chocolate using the heat from the water and spoon into a piping bag. On top of your sweet treats, pipe a circle of chocolate with four little spider legs on each side. It’s so simple to do but looks great, especially with lots of tiny spiders! Just remember to use boiling water from your Quooker taps for super quick melting.

Our kitchen designers know the capabilities of Neff and Quooker products inside out, and we often incorporate them into our exquisitely crafted designer kitchens. For a great real-world example, take a look at this case study of our contemporary kitchen with a country feel, where both Quooker and Neff have their spot in the limelight.

If you’re looking for an award-winning kitchen to bake your next seasonal treats in, take a look at more of our real customer kitchens. It’s National Baking week this week, which is fantastic news for us at Kitchen Design Centre. We published an article recently about how to design the best kitchen for baking, but as we were writing it we got to thinking…exactly why do we all like baking so much? Well, there are a couple of reasons – and every single one of them helps us use our kitchen to its very fullest. In some cases, baking helps us to find ways in which we’ve never used our kitchen before!

  1. Baking Encourages Creativity In The Kitchen

 woman using cookie cutter

Baking is a skill that’s well known as being easy to pick up, but very hard to master. This makes it perfect for anyone, from the culinary expert to the aspiring hobbyist chef. If you’re a member of the first group, you can use your kitchen to its fullest potential, taking advantage of its layout, storage and appliances to whip up some mouth-watering baked goods. Meanwhile, if you’re just starting out, you can familiarise yourself with your kitchen as you go along, working your way up the recipe book to the most complex of cakes!

Baking is also a great outlet for creativity. Lots of our customers are creative people, as you can tell from a quick glance through our case studies. This recent ultra-modern design is the work of our own kitchen designer Maxine being guided by our customers’ creative input, resulting in a truly original design. With an open mind and confidence in the kitchen, there’s no end to what you might be able to create!

  1. Baking Helps Bonding In The Kitchen

mixing ingredients

If you learned to cook from an early age, it’s likely that baking was your first foray into the kitchen. Children love baking with their parents because of the appeal in pretty colours in the icing, the safety of the methods, and the sweetness of the final results. Not to mention, of course, the cheeky taste of chocolate here and there when baking! Activities like baking give parents peace of mind in terms of safety, and children plenty of opportunity to explore the world of cooking, turning the kitchen into a marvellous place for family bonding.

  1. Baking Brings Us Together!

 freshly baked buns

All mealtimes are social occasions, but baking is especially so. We’ve just mentioned above how the act of baking itself is a valuable chance for some bonding, and that applies to enjoying the final results, too! There’s a reason that cakes and pastries are so often used for bake sales and community events – they’re fantastic sharing foods, which makes them amazing for family mealtimes at home. After all, mealtimes at home are inherently social events, where family members congregate in the kitchen to bond, enjoy shared family values and tell stories of their day. And with some beautiful baking, you can squeeze one or two more of those get-together events every once in a while – and with some wonderful cake and biscuits, too! It’s just one more reason why baking is perfect to help you make the most of your kitchen; the very heart of your home.

Here at Kitchen Design Centre, lots of our talented designers are keen cooks too, which means we understand your passion for wonderful food! We firmly believe that your dream kitchen should reflect your personality, moulding itself to your favourite ways of cooking and living. Pop into any one of our designer kitchen showrooms in Manchester, Blackburn or Colne, where any one of our designers will be only too happy to sit down with you and discuss your plans!

The return of The Great British Bake Off has got the UK in baking frenzy. So far, we’ve covered biscuits, bread and batter and there is plenty more baking inspiration to come. But how can you ensure a winning bake? A lot of the time, it’s the right cooking equipment that makes the real difference. With Neff appliances, you can be sure of a great bake – thanks to their state-of-the-art functionality.

Top kitchen products for baking

Neff’s single and double ovens feature the innovative CircoTherm functionality. Essentially, this is Neff’s innovative hot-air system that ensures baking perfection. CircoTherm allows better cooking results because of its even heat transference through the oven cavity. This means even bakes and gorgeous golden brown cakes. What’s more, there’s no loss of heat when opening the door – meaning you can get away with that cheeky mid-bake peek!

For those of you that love to bake but are short on time, Neff CircoTherm is ideal for you. You can save time by cooking a three-course meal at the same time thanks to multi-level cooking. CircoTherm also ensures no mix of flavours and that each course tastes just like it should. Furthermore, desired temperatures can be achieved more quickly and little to no pre-heating is required.

Bake at home with Neff kitchen appliances

Feeling all inspired? If so, get baking with one of these fabulous recipes. Designed by the Cookaholics team at Neff, you’re guaranteed a scrumptious bake.

A delicious zesty bake

If you’re a fan of fruits and nuts, you’ll love this soft and moist Clementine and Almond Cake. With cinnamon, allspice and seasonal berries, it’s perfect for autumn and winter. Cook in your CircoTherm oven for one hour and 40 minutes for cake perfection.

Cupcakes for the kids

Kids love baking and adore bite-sized treats, like cupcakes, so why not get them to help you out with these Avocado Red Velvet Cupcakes? Featuring an innovative but tasty selection of ingredients, these cakes are scrumptious while being healthy too! The CircoTherm comes up trumps again here too and the cupcakes require a bake time of just 25 minutes.

An American-themed bake

Love American-inspired eats and desserts? If so, just wait until you try Neff’s Pecan & Chocolate Pie – it’s as good as you’d find in any American diner! Ideal for autumn, and celebrating Thanksgiving, this pie can be cooked to perfection in just 35 minutes with your CircoTherm Intensive setting.

Your Sunday lunch finale

Looking for a new dessert to serve up this Sunday? Forget bread and butter pudding and trifle – you need Neff’s Pear & Chocolate Brioche Pudding on your table. With the temperatures continuing to rise, there’s an abundance of scrumptious food to eat in April. However, seasonal foods at this time of the year tend to peak rather quickly – so if you want to make the most of them it’s best to head to your supermarket and purchase them right now!

Our top picks

In April, we recommend you get your hands on the following ingredients:

Asparagus

Asparagus tastes its best in spring and is a particularly yummy addition to many spring dishes. It works well with pasta, in salads, or as a side for many fish dishes. Season with lemon and mint for the ultimate veggie taste sensation.

Rhubarb

Ditch the apples and pears for something more seasonal with a delicious rhubarb dessert. Whether you stick to a classic rhubarb pie or opt for something lighter, such as a cheesecake or pavlova, is completely up to you!

Whats in season this april

Prawns

Prawns are a great addition to any meal and come with a multitude of benefits. They’re high in protein, low in fat, and contain lots of essential vitamins, like B12, B3 and Zinc. Marinate, grill, sauté, or batter them for a delicious side snack or addition to a meal. Alternatively, you can add them to quiches, omelettes, or pizzas for a bit of variety!

Whats in season this april

Lamb

British lamb remains in season in April and tastes great when roasted with garlic and herbs. The result offers more of a Mediterranean flavour too – perfect for the early spring months. Opt for roast leg of lamb with veggies or serve up oven baked lamb chops with a delicious, seasonal sauce. Indian or Moroccan spiced lamb is also another great idea and is best served on skewers.

Make the most of all your seasonal favourites with these Neff recipes that are perfect for April…

Ideal for snacking on or for spring gatherings with friends, these lamb koftas are sure to go down well. Get inspired for summer with this Moroccan favourite, which takes just 15 minutes to prep and 30 minutes to cook in your Circo Therm oven.

A cheeky main: Prawn and Fresh Pesto Pizza

Chef up something that both you and the kids will enjoy with this delicious, posh pizza! With veggies, olive oil, prawns, and garlic, the final masterpiece is pretty healthy too. Once you’ve designed your pizza, pop it in on the Circo Therm Intensive setting for 40-45 minutes.

For dessert: Rhubarb Pavlova

Swap the pastry and crumbles for something light and fluffy with a yummy rhubarb pavlova. Featuring all your fruity favourites, it’s guaranteed to taste good – but remember to give yourself plenty of time to prepare it as it take two hours to cook in your Neff Circo Therm and Steam Oven.

Whats-in-season-March

March shows the first signs of spring and promises a new gathering of vegetables, fruits, meats and seafood. While you’ll find lots available on your supermarket shelves, keep a look out for the best seasonal ingredients for a dish that looks and tastes great.

Our top picks

In March, we recommend you get your hands on the following ingredients:

Spring greens

Spring greens are the first cabbages of the year and are tasty and healthy. A great side, they go well with all your meats and other veggies. They can be distinguished them from other cabbages because of their fresh, loose heads. They also don’t have the hard heart found in other cabbages.

Whats in season March

Purple sprouting broccoli

Rich in a number of nutrients, broccoli is a staple in most homes, but did you know that seasonal broccoli brings with it even more benefits? Purple sprouting broccoli is your best choice for March and is leafier and deeper in colour than your typical broccoli, with extra crunch.

Whats-in-season-March-broccoli

Spring Lamb

Spring lamb offers the benefit of being very tender – making it ideal for one-pot meals. Although doesn’t have as much flavour as lamb later in the year, since it hasn’t had as much time to graze, it can still be combined with a range of other seasonal foods for a delicious tasting and textured dish.

Whats in season March

Mussels

Mussels are great choices for your fish stew and also have the added benefit of being very cheap. Despite their cost, they make great additions in any ‘posh’ menu, or in special occasion meals.

Whats in season March

Grapefruit

We love all our zesty fruits, especially the grapefruit – which is also said to be good for the waistline! Grapefruits tend to be juicier and sweeter during the spring and winter months and make a great addition to your morning breakfast or a delicious zesty cake.

What in season March

Be inspired by our March menu favourites

The Bake It Yourself team has come up with whole range of sumptuous recipes, perfect for early spring. Some of our favourites include:

A succulent lamb main: One-Pan Lamb Cutlets & Sweet Potatoes

Switch the Sunday roast for this delicious dish, featuring the seasonal favourite of lamb. We particularly love the Mediterranean-feel of this one-pot meal – getting us in the mood for sunnier days. Cook in your CircoRoasting oven at 170 for 40 minutes for one-pot perfection.

A delicious fish dish: Normandy Fish Stew

If you’re a fan of more adventurous cuisine and seafood dishes, you’ll love this fish stew. It combines seasonal mussels with white fish, prawns, and a whole lot of tasty extras for something quite spectacular! Cook on the Bottom Heat setting at 180 for about 25 minutes in total.

A zesty desert: Clementine and Almond Cake

Zesty fruits taste great in March – and almonds are popular too. This cake combines the two with other delicious flavours for a treat that’s perfect for pudding. The cake can be cooked in the CircoTherm at 180 and takes 1 hour and 10 minutes to bake.

whats-in-season-february

As we embrace the last of the cold temperatures it’s a good idea to stock up on hearty foods that are full of flavour. Although filling and satisfying, most of our favourite February foods are healthy too – keeping you feel full while still sitting perfectly alongside your 2016 diet.

Go for root vegetables

whats-in-season-february

Root vegetables are a great option at this time of the year. Potatoes, celeriac, swede and turnips all taste great and add bulk to your dishes. Horseradish, chicory, shallots and black truffles also start to come into season making for some interesting vegetarian options too.

Add a touch of summer with zesty fruits

whats-in-season-february

Kiwi fruit, passion fruit, clementines and pomegranate are just some of the February fruits you might like to experiment with. If you prefer the more traditional staples, why not opt for pears and bananas, which taste great the majority of the year.

Opt for light fish dishes….

whats in season february

From langoustine, oysters and scallops through to skate, lemon sole and mackerel, there’s plenty of choice when it comes to seasonal fish.

…or indulge in a bit of game

whats-in-season-february

If you prefer a meat main why not opt for game? Guinea fowl, hare, mallard, partridge and venison are all highly desirable at this time of year.

Be inspired by our February menu favourites

From warming soups to delicious two-course meals, ideal for the family and those dinner dates, the Neff team have some great meal ideas for February…

Satisfying Soups

If you’re looking for a yummy lunch or light dinner we recommend a homemade soup. Ideal for the chilly month of February, our Bake It Yourself soups are sure to warm you up…

Spiced Root Vegetable Soup

Root vegetables are still in abundance in February – so why not put them to good use with this spicy soup? Carrots, onion, lentils and parsnips all come together to create a winter taste sensation. Best of all, all you need is a hand blender and your Neff hob.

Sweet Potato, Red Pepper & Coconut Soup

For those of you with a sweet tooth, this coconut soup is sure to be a winner. While warming it also has a real feel of summer with its fruity, coconut kick. Cook your veggies in your Neff Oven, and then heat the whole lot up on your hob for thick and creamy soup perfection.

Marvelous Mains

With many of us still trying to keep an eye on our waistlines a healthy fish dish is a great choice…

Stuffed Salmon

This oily fish is full of nutrients, including all your essential fats. Enhance the flavour with herbs for a dish the whole family will love. To ensure the fish remains moist, rather than dry, cook at 160 degrees in your CircoTherm for the recommended time.

Comforting Cake

While it’s not quite time to get the berries and cream out, you can still enjoy a delicious cakey feast…

Carrot and Nut Cake

This yummy cake makes use of one of our favourite root vegetables and teams it with orange and mixed fruit for a great sweet treat. The nuts and seeds also provide those all-important healthy fats, turning something that one might consider sinful into something that’s almost healthy! Cook to perfection in your CircoTherm in 75 minutes.

January is the perfect time to get experimental in the kitchen. However, more traditional favourites include apples, clementines, lemons, oranges and pears.

There are a fabulous range of meat, game, and seafood choices in January, the best being duck, goose, grouse, guinea fowl, turkey, langoustine, lobster and oysters. November – the time of the year when we begin to get a little indulgent with our meal choices. Succulent meats, flavoursome fruits and veggies and oven-baked fish are just a few of things you’ll be popping onto your menus, as well as those all-important rich desserts. But what ingredients really taste best at this time of the year? That’s exactly what we’ll be finding out in today’s blog…

When it comes to your fruits and veggies you’ll be wanting to pick ones that are full of flavour and relatively dense. Pumpkin is a November favourite and extremely versatile, along with other root vegetables like celeriac, sweet potato and butternut squash. Other fabulous veggies include turnips, artichoke and kale, while chestnuts, apples, clementines and cranberries are some of the season’s best fruits.

Protein sources are equally delicious in November, with venison, lamb, pork and guinea fowl being some of the most popular. While venison is a great option for the more health conscious foodie, lamb provides that rich, indulgent flavour and texture – it’s certainly worth the calories!

If you prefer a fish dish, why not opt for mussels or crab? Oven-baked mussels, cooked on the half shelf and drizzled with olive oil and herbs makes the perfect main.

Just because it’s autumn, doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a yummy fruit salad. While berries may slowly begin to disappear this month, other classics, such as apples, grapes, bananas, mango and damsons are great options to choose from.
